Overcoming Space Constraints with a Rooftop Container Solution
Located in the heart of Leeds city centre, the client’s care home required a life safety UPS system to support critical smoke extraction fans in the event of a power failure. However, the project was complicated by severe space limitations, with minimal available room indoors or at ground level for housing the required equipment.
Following consultation, it was agreed that the only feasible location was the building’s roof, necessitating a lightweight, fire-rated, weatherproof container solution that could be craned into place.
Carter Sullivan designed and delivered a 10-foot containerised UPS system, purpose-built to meet both life safety standards and the unique challenges of rooftop deployment.
Key features included:
- 60-minute fire-rated construction (floor, walls, ceiling)
- Integrated cooling, heating, and lighting
- Pre-fabricated off-site for minimal on-site disruption
- Roof-mounted via crane lift
Once lifted into place, our in-house installation team spent 3 days completing the full system installation, which included:
- 30kVA Ablerex EN50171-compliant UPS
- 3-hour autonomy battery system using Yuasa blocks
- Project delivered on time and within budget
- Fully compliant life safety UPS system, supporting smoke control
- Seamless coordination of crane lift, container delivery, and rooftop installation
- Minimal disruption to site operations
