New Datacentre UPS and Generator Supply & Installation

Northamptonshire-based local authority data centre resilience upgrade. Installation of a 120kW UPS system and 200kW diesel generator with integrated day tank. Project delivered within a two-week programme while the site remained fully operational.

Project Overview

Northamptonshire-based local authority data centre resilience upgrade. Installation of a 120kW UPS system and 200kW diesel generator with integrated day tank. Project delivered within a two-week programme while the site remained fully operational.

The Challenge

The authority was experiencing regular power outages and their existing DRUPS system was reaching end of life. The instability of the local power infrastructure posed a significant risk to the site’s live data centre environment, where uninterrupted power is critical to maintaining IT services and public sector operations.

The authority required a modern, resilient critical power solution capable of supporting essential servers and infrastructure without disrupting day-to-day operations. All installation and switchover works had to be completed while the site remained live, eliminating the possibility of extended downtime.

Our Challenges

Delivering a seamless transition from the existing DRUPS system to a new UPS and generator configuration within a live data centre environment required meticulous planning and execution.

Key challenges included:

  • Maintaining continuous power to critical IT equipment during installation
  • Designing a resilient system architecture to eliminate previous reliability issues
  • Safely decommissioning and isolating the existing DRUPS system, which remained on site due to physical constraints
  • Completing the full installation, integration, and commissioning within a strict two-week timeframe
The Project

Carter Sullivan delivered a full turnkey critical power installation, including the supply, installation, and commissioning of a 120kW UPS system and 200kW diesel generator with day tank.

The new system architecture was designed to provide robust, layered resilience:

  • Installation of a new generator Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS)
  • Installation of a UPS bypass switch
  • New essential distribution board (UPS-fed)
  • New non-essential distribution board (generator-fed)

The UPS is backed by the generator, ensuring uninterrupted support to critical data centre equipment, including servers and core IT infrastructure. The generator also supports mechanical systems, air conditioning, and lighting, ensuring full-site operational continuity during mains failure.

The existing DRUPS system was formally decommissioned and safely isolated but retained on site due to logistical constraints.

Our Highlights
  • Delivered a complete turnkey UPS and generator solution within a two-week programme
  • Maintained uninterrupted operation of a live local authority data centre
  • Eliminated recurring power outages with a resilient, modern critical power infrastructure
  • Improved long-term reliability and operational continuity for essential public services
